Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Engraved Bird and Butterfly Locket Necklace

This beautiful antique locket originates from the Victorian era, around 1880. It is oval in shaped with engraved front, an Aesthetic period design split into sections, depicting a flying swallow bird and two butterflies. Very feminine and pretty. The edges of the locket are lightly engraved too, the back is smooth.

Inside the locket there is space to put two photos inside, 1 original frame is still there. You can put two photos inside as demonstrated by the floral backing paper, one would sit behind the frame and one behind the lip on the other side. Opens and closes securely

Unmarked but tests as Sterling Silver Back and Front. Back and Front lockets were typical of lockets from this era. In the late Victoria and Edwardian period, lockets were manufactured with solid silver fronts and solid silver backs – to clarify, the metal at the front is a sheet of solid silver and the metal at the back is also a sheet of solid silver. Using this method allowed heavy engraving which would not be possible on silver plating. The sides, hinges and the loose frames inside are usually made of a sturdy base metal. The reasoning behind such construction is that silver is a soft metal and lockets by default are opened and closed regularly. Using a sturdier metal than silver meant that they were less likely to buckle or break.

The locket comes on an unusual solid sterling silver chain which is almost two tone, with dark and light links. The necklace chain is 18" in length and the locket measures 3.5 cms without the bails, 4.5 cms with the bail loops. Weighs 13.7 grams (necklace and chain together)

In fair antique condition, there is surface wear to the exterior (light scratches and scuffs and a few small dings) - most of the wear is on the back of the locket,the front is still crisp and lovely. There is also light tarnish inside. Please look at all of the photos. Apologies for any large black marks in the photos, the locket is shiny and it kept reflecting my black camera, the large black marks you are are not actually marks - just reflections!

LAYAWAY POLICY

We offer layway!

We do not offer layaway for the first 48 hours after an item has been listed, in order to give everyone a fair chance to purchase the item outright if desired. After 48 hours have passed, any item over the value of £100 GBP can be placed on layway.

An initial deposit of 20% of the item cost to hold the piece is required, and full payment is to be made within 8 weeks. Instalments can be made towards the Paypal invoice as and when suits you within the 8 week period. Once the final payment has cleared the item will be shipped.

Please note as a small business we can't hold layaways for longer than 8 weeks. Please be advised layaway items are a final sale and non-returnable, and layaway items are not included in any discounts, promotion codes or shop sales. If you change your mind during your layaway plan and no longer want your item, you will forfeit your deposit. The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.

As an alternative to a layaway scheme, PayPal credit is a great way to pay for your item over time. At the time of writing they offer up to 18 months to pay without interest. Paying for your item this way would mean you will receive it much faster as we would post after full payment was made to us.

DELIVERY TIME:

We aim to post every order within 48 hours of the order being placed, but usually we post within 24. Please be aware that International orders can take up to 28 working days to arrive, sometimes they can be held up outwith our control due to Customs or other mail delays.

POSTAGE COSTS AND SERVICES:

UK ORDERS: All items are sent via a tracked and insured service (Either 1st Class Recorded Delivery or Next Day Special Delivery), we will update you with your parcel tracking number after it has been posted so that you can follow its journey to you.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS: For items under £60 you may select standard airmail or International Tracked and Signed. Standard airmail has no tracking or insurance, and therefore if the parcel goes missing in the post we cannot be held liable or claim for compensation. We encourage all buyers to pay for the Tracked service, as this comes with £250 insurance cover in the event that the parcel goes missing. £250 is the maximum amount that we can insure any parcel for. If you are ordering multiple items that total over £250, we encourage you to place individual orders and have them send individually, to allow for more complete insurance cover.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS: For items over £60 - We post all items over the value of £60 by International Tracked and Signed Delivery. You will be updated with a tracking number after the parcel has been dispatched. Please do not be alarmed if the tracking goes quiet for a few days - this is common when the parcel is passing through customs.

It's very rare for a parcel to go missing, we have only had ever 1 parcel go missing out of thousands sent over the course of 4 years. We unfortunately cannot be held responsible for items which go missing in the post, we always obtain a receipt to prove that we have fulfilled our duties and have shipped the item via whichever method you selected. If you selected International Tracked delivery then we can file an insurance claim to seek reimbursement for the missing parcel up to the value of £250, however if you selected standard airmail then no compensation can be claimed.

ORDER CANCELLATIONS: We aim to post every order within 48 hours of the order being placed, but usually we post within 24. For this reason, we cannot usually accept order cancellations as we would require notice of cancellation prior to the item shipping. If you do contact us to cancel an order before it has been shipped, we will cancel the order for you as per your request and 10% of the item cost will be charged and retained from your payment as our re-stocking fee.

PLEASE NOTE:

Customers are responsible for entering the correct shipping information; changes to shipping address after order is placed can not be guaranteed. We always post to the address you supply to us on Etsy, so if you get this wrong unfortunately we cannot be held responsible if the parcel does not reach you. Re-shipping orders returned to us due to buyer error (incorrect address at checkout) will incur new postage charges which are the sole responsibility of the buyer.

REFUND POLICY:

We are sure you will be delighted with your purchase, but in the case where you are not we will offer you a full refund on the safe return of the item. The item must be in original condition with no alterations, damage or additional wear to be eligible for a refund. Please inform us of your intent to return within 3 days of the item arriving, and post back within 7. All items must be received back with their original packaging in full, we cannot refund is an item arrives back with incomplete packaging.

Please note that return postage is payable by the buyer and not Dear Rose, With Love, and original postage costs are non refundable. Please ensure all original packaging is used to send the item back, and please use a tracked shipping method. International orders returned must clearly state 'RETURN' on the outer packaging to avoid us incurring customs charges. If the customer does not mark 'Return' on the parcel and we incur Customs charges due to this then the amount will be deducted from their refund price.

Customers in the EU have by law 14 days to return an item which they do not wish to keep.

GIFT WRAPPING:

All items are sent fully gift wrapped as standard - either in a gift box, gift bag, or gift wrap. It's not a problem to post directly to your recipient if you are gifting, if you would like us to included a custom note or message in the parcel just let us know when you place your order!
